But, beyond the beach, glamorous high-rises shimmer in the sun and upscale shops and gourmet restaurants beckon you to indulge. Located just 25 miles north of Miami Beach, Fort Lauderdale combines the glitz of cosmopolitan South Florida with a treasure trove of family-friendly attractions—from gondola rides to wildlife encounters. Plus, get your fill of mouthwatering Florida cuisine, including local favorites like key lime pie, conch fritters, Cuban sandwiches and Florida stone crab. Past and Present
In 1920, construction began on Fort Lauderdale’s labyrinth of canals, creating the first of the iconic “finger islands.” Today, over 165 miles of navigable canals weave through the city, earning its title as the “Venice of America.” Fort Lauderdale’s impressive inland waterways and beautiful year-round weather has gained a world-renowned reputation among yacht owners. With more than 50,000 yachts and 2,000 superyachts registered in Fort Lauderdale, it’s no wonder the city has been crowned the “Yachting Capital of the World.” Fort Lauderdale also hosts the world’s largest in-water boat event, the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.
