Navigation and the Stars

Ancient Polynesians traveled great distances across the Pacific Ocean, navigating without GPS, maps or high-tech equipment. For direction, they looked to clues from nature, such as:

  • The rising and setting of the sun
  • The position of the stars and moon
  • Environmental factors, like ocean swells, winds, currents and birds

The stars played a vital role in early sea travel. The North Star, remains as a guide to the latitude one may be at on the ocean. Stars that cross the sky directly over one’s home are providing seafarers a sense of direction.
